Bernadt: "County Republicans Should Apologize"

"Lincoln deserves better than the "race to the bottom" politics Glenn Friendt, Jim Haga, and Republican State Party Director Jessica Moening forced on the community during the 2005 elections. Not only do they owe Terry Werner and Dan Marvin an apology for their actions, they owe the entire city," said Kevin Bernadt, County Democratic Party Chair.

At Tuesday's monthly Central Committee meeting, Bernadt and the County Party adopted a resolution calling on the Lancaster County Republican Party to denounce former Party Chair Jim Haga's actions and denounce Glen Friendt's "negative and possibly illegal mailings."

"We have come to expect that kind of Karl Rove style of behavior from the National Republican Party. But we hoped that Lincoln would be spared the kind of negativity and distortion that is becoming the trademark of Republican operatives," Bernadt said.

"It's time for the Republican County Party to make amends with the community. Their representatives have insulted significant community leaders from their own party, possibly violated election finance law, and lowered the level of debate in the community," Bernadt concluded.

The resolution as passed:

Whereas the National Republican Party has become enamored with Karl Rove style attack attics which has included spreading rumors that Governor Anne Richards was a lesbian and that Senator John McCain was mentally unbalanced because of his experience as a POW in Vietnam.

Whereas former Republican County Chair Jim Haga brought this spring's better city campaign to an embarrassing conclusion by taunting unsuccessful city council candidate Terry Werner, and then claimed he had purposely lied to the Lincoln Journal Star

Noting that the Lancaster County Republican Party has never censured or expressed any disapproval for Haga's disgraceful actions.

Noting also that it was recently revealed that former Republican city council member Glen Friendt had recently paid for negative and possibly illegal mailings attacking Democratic candidates in the last election.

The Lancaster County Democratic Party hereby, calls on the Republican Party to denounce Glen Friendt and his negative and deceitful attacks on city council candidate and city councilman Dan Marvin.

If the Lancaster County Republican Party supports such under handed politics either tacitly or openly that is something the voters of Lancaster County should know.
