Dear Henry and other Lincoln Nebraska Democrats:
I was extremely pleased to hear from you and know that you are open to our idea of forming a "committee of correspondence."
In response to your questions about digital cameras, etc., I have attached some photos taken today a mile or two from my house in the center of Lincoln. Historic detail can follow at a later date. The first picture is a representative 18th c church. The next is our library, then a shot of our library bulletin board (where we would like to announce our correspondence with Lincoln, NE) -- Lincoln attracts a lot of bird-watchers and nature-philes. The number of Spanish-speaking bilingual nature tour goers is limited, but Lincolnites reach out. The working city of Waltham is about 6 miles away, and has quite a few Spanish speakers.
Our open and tree-filled common land is the great achievement of previous generations of Lincolnites who could forsee suburban sprawl and used common funds to purchase land for all to share in perpetuity. We even have a working farm owned by the town and supported by residents. Needless to say, there's now a premium on such a town 10 miles from Boston, though Lincoln has the highest percentage of affordable housing (almost 9%) in the state, thanks to some liberal mindedness among the voters. The influx of wealthy suburban professionals has increased the ranks of republicans. Our largest voting designation, however, is "unenrolled," which we would like to convert to "democrat."
The brick colonial was built in the first year of George Washington's presidency. Descendents of John Q. Adams continue to live in Lincoln, as do ordinary joes like the rest of us.
We will be having our Lincoln Town Democrat Committee meeting on Sunday June 13 at 7:00 pm (6:00 Nebraska time). We are hosting the local John Kerry campaign rep, who will be talking about what we can do for the campaign. We live in a state that always votes democrat in national elections, so we need to reach out.
If possible, I'd like to read something to everyone from your group -- perhaps you all could come up with something about your Lincoln democratic tradition, your goals, what the issues are there -- whatever you like -- the important thing is that it be a group effort. I'll read it to the group and we will work up a response together. We should be able to tell you some of our perspective as residents of the state where Kerry's been senator for 20 years.
We don't have a television program, but it's a good idea. We can share some more photos, I'm sure, including some of the personalities.
I'll leave it at that for now.
Best wishes,
